The orange and black 'Yarning Circle' Mat is one of our best-sellers and is the ideal way to introduce children to the world of Aboriginal Art and storytelling and embed Aboriginal culture into the classroom through symbolism

Australian Aboriginal artist De Greer Yindimincarlie, of the Wiradjuri Nation in central New South Wales, designed this recycled, reversible floor mat. Look closely and you will see a variety of different Aboriginal symbols including men, women, and children, as well as emu or kangaroo tracks, digging tools, boomerangs, and coolamons.

De Greer Yindimincarlie describes her design: "I draw my men sitting towards the fire as they sit with their legs outstretched towards the campfire, and I draw my women facing away from the fire, as they sit with their legs tucked under their bottoms, hence the facing way… I draw them like that because that's the way I was taught the symbols and the way I have always drawn and taught the symbols to others."

These large outdoor mats are perfect for schools and early learning environments. Use them indoors for storytelling, arts and crafts adventures, and as a game or transition mat. Outdoors, the kids can enjoy picnics and outdoor lessons on these mats too.

We suggest using them in tandem with resources such as the Little Black Game Pack (another of De's fabulous creations) to dig deep into Aboriginal learning experiences and extend the children's learning and development of language and symbols. Click here for an interesting read about teaching Aboriginal culture in primary school.

The 'Yarning Circle' mat is reversible, which gives you two looks for the price of one, and also extends the life of your mat. You could pair these with a selection of our Aboriginal cushion covers to inject some more colour, culture and comfort - perfect for a chill-out reading corner.

Like all our recycled outdoor mats, The Yarning Circle is durable and easy to clean, as well as comfortable to sit on or walk on. Sand and grass simply shake off, and any heavier soiling can be wiped down or hosed off.

We are proud that all our Aboriginal Design Recycled Mats have been created in consultation with Aboriginal artists and their communities. The Aboriginal designs on these mats have been given the green light by the traditional people of the land, to share with the wider community.

We're now exploring how we can 're-recycle' your unwanted mats! Our exciting initiative for re-purposing and re-using them is a must-read.
